Alfred Carter Keene and his brother David Madison Keene, of Tenn. crossed the plains in 1847 to Fort Walla Walla, experiencing the usual dangers of that long and tedious, and sometimes hazardous, journey. At Fort Walla Walla they spent the night with Dr. Whitman, of historic fame, and there they met I. N. Gilbert, another early pioneer of Oregon, who, in company with the Keene's mounted cayuse ponies and crossed the cascade mountains (Barlow Road) to the Willamette valley, where they arrived in November of 1847. History tells us that the Whitman massacre occured on November 29, 1847.
