OBITUARY:
James L. Farnham died at his home in Marion, Oregon, December 8th, 1895. He was 72 years old and was born at Genesee, New York, January 28, 1823, moved to the state of Michigan in early life, where he resided until April 7, 1885, when he removed with his family to Oregon, where he has since resided. He embraced religion in the year 1858, in the Congregational church. He enlisted in company I, 4th regiment September 4, 1864, at Flat Rock, Michigan. He has been for many years a pensioner and a member of the G. A. R. Sedgwick post, Salem. Was married to Mary Avery, Nov. 14, 1846, and died November 17, 1847, married again to Percy A. Hudson February 7, 1850, who died September 24, 1858, the fruit of this union was four children, two of whom survive Mrs. Young of Washington, and Edgar Farnham, of Marion. Was married again to Mary S. Whipple April 3rd, 1859, who still survives to mourn his loss. The result of this last union was five children, four of whom are also left to mourn the loss of a loving father. During the last six months of his life, he has been a great sufferer, but oh, so patient; if he chance to speak an impatient word; it was immediately followed by a pleasant word and smile. He leaves a sister in San Francisco in her sixtieth year, the last of a large family of children. During the few years that he resided in Marion he has lived a very quiet, peaceable life and thereby made many warm friends who have been dipped in deep sympathy with the bereaved family.
Funeral services conducted by the Rev. B. F. Hinshaw at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at the residence, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Friend’s burying grounds on the hill west of town, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, quite a concourse of people followed the remains to their resting place.
