OBITUARY: 
Stanley L. Russell
September 15, 1923 - August 12, 2003
SHERIDAN - Mr. Russell was born in Sublimity, Ore. on Sept. 15, 1923, the son of the late Harold E. and Elizabeth Doerfler Russell. He was raised and received his education at Marion and graduated from high school in Aumsville. During WWII, he served with the U.S. Navy and was with the Adm. Nimitz’s staff on Guam as a radioman. Following his discharge he returned to this area and attended college at Pacific University in Forest Grove. He then went on to teach high school, teaching for about three years at Neah Kanie High School near Tillamook, then for over 20 years at Hayward High School in Fremont, Calif.
While in college he was inducted into the N.A.I.A. Hall of Fame for football. His record still stands for his longest punt from the line of scrimmage of 72 yards. He also is in the Pacific University Hall of Fame for football, and was voted All American second team. He had permanently resided in this area since the mid-1980’s working as a substitute teacher, and during summer months with his brother in his business Russell Landscaping Co. He also was a pilot and enjoyed flying gliders as well as prop planes. He was a member of the Salem Eagles Lodge and enjoyed dancing.
Survivors include his son, Patrick Russell of Kallispel, Mont.; daughter, Stephanie Russell of Auburn, Calif.; brothers, Gene Russell of Sublimity and Eldon Russell of Salem; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilburn S. Russell in 2001.
Visiting will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sat., Aug. 16 at Weddle Funeral Home. Services will be follow at 1 p.m. Interment will be at Marion Friends Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
