OBITUARY:
Richard James Hammond, 73, of Silverton, died Aug. 8, 2002. The youngest of four children born to Katherine and Ruggel’s Hammond, Richard resided with his family in Hawaii, the Philippines, and Southern California.
Richard began working at the age of six as a child actor, appearing in many feature movies such as The Little Rascals Productions and the Spencer Tracy movie “Boys Town.”
Richard attended UCLA and subsequently became a salesman, working within the electronics industry. Successful in his field, he rose to become the president and CEO of various companies. In the early 1970’s he founded “Semi-Dice,” which is still a successful company today.
Moving to Silverton in 1988, he met Marcie. They married in 1990, sharing residency in both Silverton and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Richard has wonderful friends in Mexico who affectionately nicknamed him “Pinche Ricardo.”
A man prone to ides and vision, Richard and Marcie began raising Japanese Wagyu cattle in 1990. After extensive research Richard was convinced these cattle would improve the American Cattle Industry. He was right. Richard was a major contributor to Washington State University Wagyu Cattle Research Program, the most extensive in the world. Today his cattle operation, based in Eastern Oregon, has expanded to a herd of Wagyu, Angus and Wagyu-Angus cross cattle, considered some of the “Best of the Breed” in the world, and sold worldwide. Richard loved all animals; at one time he owned nine dogs, but never less than two at a time. Jack Russell Terriers were one of his favorites, but all were susceptible to his love. Richard leaves behind his friend and constant companion “Kelly”, his border collie.
Richard also had a love for horses and rode both English and Western. In recent years he opted for cruising through his cattle on his Japanese “horse,” his four-wheeler, dubbed “Thunder.”
A man with a rich sense of humor, he was a joy to all who met him. Richard’s greatest passion was his friends and loved ones. Most everyone he met became a friend, and eventually, all his friends became his loved ones. He will be missed very much.
Richard is survived by his wife Marcie; sister Carolen; children Cassie, Paul, Richard Jr. and Jimmy; stepchildren Marlie, Marshall and Mitchell; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
