BIOGRAPHICAL:
Maria Magdalena Blauer Kissling was born June 27, 1847 at Thun, Switzerland, the 9th child in a family of 14. She emigrated to California in 1871 and worked for 10 years as a law clerk for a Kissling uncle. Maria’s father was a lawyer in Thun and she received her education as a law clerk in his practice. She and John Kissling were second cousins; Maria was John’s 5th wife. Maria was the only one of her sisters to emigrate to the U.S. Blauer women had been educated for 13 generations and had independent careers for centuries. After her career as a law clerk in California, Maria served as a paralegal and as postmistress at Willard after her marriage.
Her ancestry was Spanish, her ancestors having also lived in France and Austria before moving to Switzerland. She was a cousin of King-Louis Phillipe, the king of France. Her mother’s ancestry was of French nobility. Her father’s family were of Hapsburg lineage and had returned to their ancestral country of Switzerland.
Maria married John Kissling at San Jose, California in January, 1881. The marriage had been prearranged by the related families. Maria and John moved back to John’s farm at Willard where she lived the rest of her life.
John and Maria had 3 sons, William John, Frederick R., and Hans, and one daughter, Maria Emma Anna Elizabeth. Maria also raised Jake as her son and John, Jr. as a small child.
Though Maria was widowed in 1891, she continued an active, involved life with her children and community. She died of cancer on September 17, 1907, at Willard. All of Maria’s children survived her, including her stepson, Jake. A bell was given to the Willard Congregational Church in her memory. It is now in a church at Central Howell.[From: Hellie Mader & Rickey, pg 173]
