OBITUARY:
West Stayton Boy Dies When His Horse Stumbles
Howard McClelland, 14 years old, son of T.Y. McClelland, a merchant of West Stayton, was found dead in the road about half a mile from his home by a Mr. Hookstraw early yesterday morning. Beside him lay the horse that he had been riding, injured so badly that it was necessary to shoot the animal. It is believed the horse stumbled and fell in the road, causing the instant death of the boy.
The boy had started the previous evening for the Hookstraw place to borrow a saddle and his absence during the night was not noticed by his parents who supposed he had come home and gone to bed. They did not know of their son’s death until told by Mr. Hookstraw.
