OBITUARY:
Pioneer Passed Away – Mrs. Mary Riches of Waldo Hills Succumbs at Age of 69 Years. – Silverton, November 6 – The county suffered the loss of another pioneer when Mrs. Mary Riches passed away Sunday afternoon at her home in the Waldo Hills, at the age of 69 years, 6 months, and 25 days.
Mrs. Mary J. Riches was born in Clarksburg, Wayne County, Indiana, April 12, 1835. Early in the year of 1852, she with her parents started for Oregon. While on the plains her parents contacted cholera, both dying within a few hours. Upon the wagon train reaching Independence Rock, July 4th, she was married to Calvin Walker, a member of the party, who died shortly afterwards, at Foster, Oregon, from an attack of the mountain fever. Mrs. Walker finished the trip with four younger brothers and on September 18th, 1852, they arrived at the old Jimmy Hunt place near Sublimity, where she resided until December 12, 1852, when she was united in marriage to Geo. P. S. Riches, and moved onto his donation land claim at Willard, Oregon where she has since resided, Mr. Riches having died May 9, 1891.
Mrs. Riches was a member of the Christian church, and loved by all who knew her.
Besides a host of friends and relatives to mourn her loss, she leaves the following children: Thomas W. Riches, Postmaster at Silverton, Oregon; Jno. H. and Chas. R. Riches of Willard, Oregon; and Mrs. Sarah Adamson, Mrs. Estella Mulkey and Mrs. Florence Givens, all of Willard, Oregon. The funeral services were held Thursday, November 8th, interment at the Warren Cemetery, Rev. R. C. Ramsby conducting the services.
