BIOGRAPHICAL: In the year 1847 R. C. Geer with his family consisting of the wife, two sons, and two daughters, emigrated from Illinois to the then little known country of Oregon. Arriving in the Willamette Valley late in the fall, they spent the first winter at the home of Mrs. Geer’s uncle near what is now known as Victor Point and the next year moved to their donation land claim. It was here on September 8th, 1851, in the little log cabin at the foot of the hill just below where the present Geer home stands that Mary Hulda Geer was born.
Here in the beautiful Waldo Hills she attended school and grew to womanhood. In 1873 she was married to W. J. Starmer, who passed away in June of last year.
Her entire life was spent in the neighborhood in which she was born, her home being on a part of her father’s donation land claim and passed away from this life on March 6, 1924.
Born of pioneer parentage who had followed the frontier from Connecticut and New York to Ohio, from Ohio to Illinois and then by ox team to Oregon, she had always retained the charitable pioneer uncomplaining spirit to the last hours of her short illness.
A brother, Calvin Geer, at present at Yuma, Arizona, and a sister, Mrs. Samantha Bowers at the old Waldo Hills home, survive her. She was a cousin of the late Ex-Governor, T. T. Geer, and an aunt of Homer Davenport and contributed several books and other articles to the Davenport Memorial at Silverton.
