1880 OR CENSUS - Samantha Bower [sic], age 37, b. Illinois, is enumerated with her husband Philip Bower [sic], age 49, occupation farmer, b. Germany, along with Harry, age 9, b. Oregon, S. F., age 7, b. Oregon.

OBITUARY: 
Pioneer of 1847 Dies at Age of 87 – South Silverton, Jan. 21 – (Special) Mrs. Samantha Geer Bowers died at her home in the Waldo Hills Saturday, January 19 in her 87th year.
She was born in Illinois July 2, 1842. In 1847 she crossed the plains by ox team in company with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph C. Geer. Practically her entire life was spent on the part of the Ralph Geer donation land claim. In 1858 she married Phillip Bowers, who died in 1911.
One brother, Calvin Geer, at present living in Yuma, Arizona, and two sons, H.W. and Frank S. Bowers, who live at the old farm, survive her. Mrs. Bowers was the last one of the pioneers in this section of the country.
She was the cousin of the late Governor, T.T. Geer, and an aunt of Homer Davenport, the renowned cartoonist.

Silverton – Mrs. Samantha Geer Bowers died at her home in the Waldo Hills Saturday at about noon at the age of 86 years, 6 months, and 17 days. She was born in Illinois on July 2, 1842, and crossed the plains with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Geer, in 1847, when the Geers took up a donation claim in the Waldo Hills. At this place Mrs. Bowers spent all the years of her life. In 1858 she was married to Philip Bowers at his home. Mr. Bowers passed away in 1911. Two sons, Harry S. and W. H., both of the home place, and her brother, Calvin Geer, 92 years old, remain to mourn her loss. She was a cousin of the late ex-Governor T.T. Geer, and an aunt to the late Homer Davenport, the world renowned cartoonist of distinguished repute.
Mrs. Bowers’ brother is now in Yuma, Arizona, where he always spends the winters with his daughters, Mrs. Ida G. Clymer. His summers have been spent here with his sisters and with a son at Burns, Ore.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Jack Ekman parlors and she will be laid to rest in the Warren Cemetery in the Waldo Hills. (From: Scrapbooks in Silverton Public Library)
