Mrs. Susan Griffith Passes Away – Another Respected Oregon Pioneer Goes To Her Reward After Long, Useful Life – Mrs. Susan Savage Griffith, wife of L. C. Griffith, died at the family home in the Waldo Hills Sunday afternoon after an illness of several weeks. Deceased was born in Missouri 70 years ago and came to Oregon with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Savage, in 1852. She was married to L. C. Griffith 50 years ago last April, and they immediately established their home on the farm where they had since resided.
Mrs. Griffith was one of the highly esteemed pioneer women of this section of the state, and in her home young and old have always found a warm welcome and hospitable entertainment. When Mr. and Mrs. Griffith celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding last April, there were present to pay their respects well known residents of all sections of the valley.
Leaves Large Family - Besides her husband, Mrs. Griffith leaves six children: Mrs. Virginia Peebles, Salem; Dr. J. C. and Dr. Dr. L. F. Griffith, Salem; Mrs. L. H. McMahan, Salem; Mrs. A. W. Giesy, Portland; Dr. Carl Griffith, Burns. The funeral was conducted from the family home at 1 p.m. Monday, Rev. P.S. Knight, the pioneer minister, officiating, and interment was made at Warren Cemetery. A large number of friends gathered at the home to pay a last tribute to her memory and to follow to her to her last resting place, and there has seldom been more genuine sorrow felt by so great a number as among those who know the beautiful character of the deceased.
Mrs. Gertrude Hibbard Currie, Miss Josephine and W. Kissling sang the touching and beautiful hymn, “Jesus Will Come,” “Rock of Ages, and “Abide With Me,” while a solo, “Saved by Grace,” sung by H. Thompson, was filled with sweet appeal. At the grave Rev. P. S. Knight concluded the services with the beautiful “Rose Ritual.” Following were the pall bearers, chosen from among the sons of the old neighbors: Edward Luthy, Ernest Luthy, W. A. Jones, J. C. Jones, G. A. Thompson, Edward May.
