OBITUARY: 
Silverton – Herbert A. Barnes, 80, of 2928 Cascade Highway, died Thursday in a local nursing home. Born in Minneapolis, he moved to Washington, then to Gresham, where he lived for 18 years. He moved to Silverton 36 years ago. He was a retired farmer in the Waldo Hills area of Silverton.
He was a charter member of Silverton Kiwanis Club and had instigated work on Evergreen Park. He was a member of Marion County Livestock Association and was on the Board of Supervisors of the Silverton Soil Conversation District.
He had served for the Production Credit Board in Salem for 19 years and on the agricultural and legislative committees of the Waldo Hills Grange. He was a member of Waldo Hills Community Club and maintained Anne Park on his property for civic clubs and public. He was a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include his sons, Richard and Robert, both of Silverton; brothers Robert, Gresham, and James, San Jose; sisters, Ellen Dederick, Silverton, Mae Walker and Lillian Monette, both of Seattle; 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Trinity Lutheran Church, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Silverton Ambulance Fund.
Unger Mortuary, Silverton, is in charge of arrangements.
