After retirement they moved to Maryhill, Washington, on the Columbia River, where Bert had an apricot orchard and was operator of the state-owned auto ferry between Maryhill and Biggs, Oregon. In his leisure he was the author of more than few published poems. Several have appeared in the Goldendale Sentinel and one in particular is credited with having contributed to the preservation of a natural monolith in the Columbia River Gorge. Beacon Rock was destined to become a source of material for Washington State Highway Department until local feeling was aroused by the plea which his poem carried to readers of the paper.”
