OBITUARY:
Drowned – A Son of Mr. Pooler Drowned in Pudding River at McCallister’s Mill – Particulars – (From Tuesday’s Daily) – Yesterday morning the sad news of the drowning of a son of Mr. Pooler, who lives near McCallister’s mill, east of this city, was received at this office. While the particulars are meager, it was learned that the boy was bathing with a number of playmates, in the pool above the dam, on Pudding River, at the site above named. He had swam out to nearly the center of the pool, when he was taken with the pains in the limbs usually termed cramps, and lost all power of aiding himself. He called for his mates to bring the boat, which was lying near the edge of the pool, and to help him get out; but before they could reach him, he was seen to sink, and did not again rise. The boys were horror stricken, and soon the news was carried to his parents, and a search of the pond was begun for his body. Friends came from all around to aid in the search. Up to a late hour Sunday evening their labors had proved fruitless, no trace of the body of the unfortunate boy having been discovered. His name was Elmer Emory Pooler, and he was about 18 years of age. The drowning took place at about 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon.
Weekly Oregon Statesman 24 Jul 1885 8:3 and 5:4. Body Found – The body of Emery Pooler, who was drowned in the pool above the dam at McCallister’s mill on Sunday, was found about twelve o’clock that night. The floodgates of the dam were thrown open, and as much of the water as possible was drawn off. They raked the bed of the pool and the body was discovered in about seven feet of water. The remains of the poor unfortunate were buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery Monday afternoon. The bereaved parents have the sympathy, as they were afforded the aid of many friends in this hour of trial and affliction.
