"COUNTRY BOY" Patton Passes
Silverton - In the passing of Robert Patton, 73, many are reminded of "Bob" as a young man and his activities in the Silverton community. It was the famous cartoonist, Homer Davenport, who immortalized "Bob" Patton in his book, "The Country Boy," as hero in the episode of the theft of "Uncle Ben's" lunch which happened as correlative with a demonstration of Patton as the champion foot racer of Waldo Hills when he and Homer Davenport drove to a neighboring town for entry in the running contest.
Patton's pals give him credit for being the first Marion county runner to wear spikes in his shoes and they relate the loss of good money bet upon the runner while he was becoming accustomed to those spikes. Other Patton boys were athletic minded as Charley was pitcher for the Waldo Hills baseball team, Johnny was shortstop and Jack fancied the jockey route, becoming locally important in winning pony running races. With neighborhood help the boys staged minstrel shows that delighted the rural audiences.
