Former Waldo Hills resident James Wiley Gilham died at his home in Salem Oct. 12. He was 90. He was born in a sod house near Wallace, Neb., Dec. 7, 1897, to George Cameron Gilham and Lillie Parton Gilham. The Gilhams settled in the Waldo Hills area in 1905 after living in the Pomeroy, Wash., area.
In 1940, Mr. Gilham and three other area residents were instrumental in obtaining electricity for the Waldo Hills area. He farmed for many years and at the start of World War II became a carpenter at Camp Adair. After the war ended, he worked for Charlie Gilbert Construction until his retirement. He was a charter member and past Master of the Union Hill Grange, as well as being an active member of the statewide organization, Pomona. He was a member of the Court Street Christian Church. Mr. Gilham was a director of the Mt. Hope Cemetery for a number of years, retiring in May of 1987. At the age of 88, he cleared a corner of the cemetery that had been overgrown by brambles and weeds. He also was instrumental in starting a perpetual care fund for the cemetery. Mr. Gilham loved gardening and was an avid rock collector.
He was preceded in death by both his first wife, Helena Christensen Gilham, and his second wife, Jennie Humphreys Gilham. Survivors include sons Daniel J. Gilham of Salem and Robert Humphreys of Sublimity; daughter Thelma Gray of Turner; brother George C. Gilham of Portland; sister Dorothy Chrisman of Salem; eight grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. Services were held Oct. 17 in the Court Street Christian Church. Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Pastor Bob Mulkey officiated. Casket bearers were Ray Means, Howard Means, Melvin Hasche, Russell Gilbertson, Russell Parton, and Allan Jasmer. Honorary casket bearers were Carl Becken, Stan Parton Marvin Becken, Gary Gilham, and Kenny Jasmer.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Mid-Willamette Valley Hospice, 340 Vista Ave. S., Salem, OR 97302, or to the Cancer Society.
