BIOGRAPHICAL:
Weston Talent Contributes to Tuesday Evening’s Program – The Eastern Oregon Teachers’ Association has just closed a session at Pendelton, successful in every way. The attendance was large and the program excellent… Weston was largely represented at the convention, and the Eastern Oregonian speaks in very complimentary terms of the program Tuesday evening when the two chief attractions were an address by Dr. Woods Hutchinson of Portland and a vocal solo by Miss Lois Peebles of Weston. A piano solo by Miss Beattie, and a reading by Miss Catharine LaBarre, teacher of elocution at the normal, are highly praised. Of Miss Peebles’ remarkably gifts as a singer, the Eastern Oregonian says: “Miss Peebles’ solo was ‘Angus Madonald,’…and her encore was ‘The Red Rose,’ Miss Peebles’ solo and response to a hearty encore were decidedly features of the convention. Miss Peebles, let it be said, is but 17 years old, and has yet to be placed under the tutelage of a teacher capable to handle a voice such as that possessed by her. Her singing was a revelation, and pleasantly surprised those even who came to the convention hall expecting something excellent. There is no doubt that Miss Peebles’ voice is phenomenal; or that, when it has reached the stage of development it will have reached a little later, the world will have added a wonderful factor to the means of entertaining and refining by musculature. OBITUARY:
Mrs. Lois Lucile Peebles Junk, the daughter of Mrs. W. W. Cooke, of this city, formerly Mrs. Virginia Griffith Peebles of Portland, Oregon, passed away at her mother’s home after a lingering illness Tuesday evening, February 17, 1920.
Mrs. Junk was a woman of exceptional talent and ability. Her musical compositions which she sang for her friends with her remarkable voice, and her numerous short poems so full of pathos which she seems to have produced almost spontaneously, showed her ability which would have made her famous had it not been for her ill health, which prevented her from meeting the public.
She was a devoted churchwoman and a loving mother and was greatly beloved by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her loss a daughter, Genevieve Lucile, one sister, Mrs. W. F. Pruden of Portland, and her mother, Mrs. Cooke.
Reverend Chase of Springbrook delivered the address at the burial of Mrs. Junk. Miss Blanche Hulbert of Barron sang two solos, most beautiful and appropriate to the occasion. The services were private and at the home of W. W. Cooke. Burial was made in Lake View Cemetery [according to daughter Genevieve Oppen, Lois was reburied in Mt. Hope].
The Gathering Place
Life changes all our thoughts of Heaven;
At first we think of streets of gold,
And mansions fair with wealth untold;
Of gates of pearl and dazzling light –
Of shining wings and robes of white,
And things all strange to mortal sight.
But in the afterward of years,
It is a more familiar place –
A home unhurt by sighs or tears,
Where waiteth many a well-known face.
With passing months it comes more near,
And grows more real day by day,
Not strange or cold, but very dear;
The Glad Home-land not far away –
Where none are sick, or poor, or lone,
The place where we shall find our own.
And as we think of all we knew –
Who there have met to part no more,
Our longing hearts desire Home too,
With all the strife and trouble o’er.

Anon. [according to Hellie, Mader & Rickey, Genevieve Oppen supplied the above clipping from a Chepek, Wisconsin newspaper, uncited]
