OBITUARY: 
SILVERTON - Martha Goodknecht Riches was born at home on the family’s century farm near Silverton on February 22, 1914. Her parents, Eunice Davenport Goodknecht and John Goodknecht, were both from area pioneer families.
Martha graduated from Silverton High School in 1932 and Oregon Normal School (now Western Oregon University) in 1934. She married the “boy next door’, Rob Riches, in 1939. Martha taught at old country schools, Davis and Willard, before her children were born; and when they left home she resumed her teaching career at Victor Point School.
She was an active member of the Silverton United Methodist Church, a long-time volunteer at the Next-To-New thrift store, and was one of the first women elected to serve on the Victor Point District school board. Rob and Martha enjoyed traveling to several different countries and most of the United States. They were also avid fans of Oregon State University athletics.
Martha is survived by her son, Robert Riches (Susy); grandsons, Greg Riches and Robbie Riches (Sarah) all of Silverton; daughter, Nancy Gillitzer (Joe); granddaughter Sarah all of Clovis, Calif.; and sister, Helen Menegat (Rolando) of North Bend, Ore. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Robert Riches; and a sister, Edna Clark.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 30 at the Silverton United Methodist Church. Arrangements are being made by Unger’s Funeral Chapel in Silverton. Contributions may be made to the Church.

Martha Goodknecht Riches, 91, of Silverton died June 22.
She was born at home on the family’s century farm near Silverton to John and Eunice Davenport Goodknecht. She graduated from Silverton High School in 1932 and Oregon Normal School (now Western Oregon University) in 1934.
She married Rob Riches in 1939.
She taught at old country schools, Davis and Willard, before her children were born. When her children left home, she resumed her teaching career at Victor Point School.
She was an active member of the Silverton United Methodist Church, a long-time volunteer at the Next-To-New thrift store, and was one of the first women elected to serve on the Victor Point school board. She and her husband enjoyed traveling to different countries and most of the United States. They were also avid fans of Oregon State University athletics, baseball and track events for many years. She continued to attend OSU football and basketball games with her son and daughter-in-law until two years ago.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and a sister, Edna Clark.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Susy Riches of Silverton; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Joe Gillitzer of Clovis, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Rolando Menegat of North Bend, Ore.; sister-in-law, Cathaleene Riches of Silverton; grandchildren, Greg Riches and Robbie and Sarah Riches of Silverton, all of Silverton, and Sarah Gillitzer of Clovis.
A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Friday at Silverton United Methodist Church. Remembrances: the church. Arrangements: Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.
