OBITUARY:
SALEM - Harold August "Pops" Halfman was born on June 29, 1915 in Walnut Creek, California to John Halfman and Margaret Meyer. He was raised in Sublimity, Oregon. On November 21, 1939 he married Marian Flora Perry. They made their home in Salem, Oregon where they lived for 62 years. Marian preceded him in death in 2006. He joined her on July 24, 2008.
For all that knew him, he was our "Pops". In 1944, Pops joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. Pops was a carpenter by profession but Pops was also a winemaker. He loved the challenge of growing his own berries and creating the perfect wine. In 1980 he established "Harold's Harvest" and entered his wine in various competitions and the Oregon State Fair where he was rewarded by winning "Best in Show" two years and at least a ribbon every one of the 23 years he entered. In 2004 the Oregon State Fair honored him with the Oregon Dreamers Award.
Pops was a devoted member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church for over 60 years. Besides his love of his faith, Pops cherished his family and nothing caused his eyes to twinkle and dance like the sight of his precious great grandchildren. He loved to have them clamber upon his lap and shower him with hugs and kisses! He greeted them always with a smile -- and a little candy treat tucked in his shirt pocket, for which they excitedly searched and found.
Pops is survived by his four sons and their spouses, Jerry and Connie, Merill and Kathy, Tim and Sandi and Ted and Theresa, all of Salem. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; Peg Halfman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Everyone that knew Pops adored and respected him. Our lives have been blessed and we rejoice that he is again reunited with Mom. Love you Pops!
Services with Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Parrish Little League, P.O. Box 13727, Salem, OR 97309 or Hospice of the Northwest. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors.
