OBITUARY:
Albert Downing Former County Treasurer Dead – Albert L. Downing, retired farmer and native of Marion County, died here yesterday evening following an extended illness. He was 66 years of age. Mr. Downing served two terms as treasurer of Marion County, being first elected in 1898. For the past few years he has been one of the auditors of the books of Marion County.
Mr. Downing was born on a farm in the Waldo Hills district, 14 miles east of Salem, the son of John and Temperance Hunt Downing, both Oregon pioneers. He secured his entire education in the schools of Marion County and was a classmate at the one-room grammar school at Waldo Hills of Frank T. Wrightman, Deputy County Sheriff, the two men as boys occupying one of the old style double desks together.
In 1898 he was elected as county treasurer and served in that capacity for two years. It was while in this office that he became a member of the Salem Elks Lodge. He was also a member of the Santiam Lodge, A.F. & A.M. of Stayton.
After serving as treasurer for Marion County, Mr. Downing returned to the farm where he lived for a few years when he sold his property and moved to Salem. With the exception of two winters spent in California on account of his health, Mr. Downing has lived in Marion County all his life.
Mr. Downing leaves four brothers and a sister, all of whom live in Oregon. They are Marion T. Downing of Lacomb, Herbert J. Downing of Wendling, Harry C. Downing and Everett Downing of Stayton, and Mrs. T.B. Patton, 444 North Winter Street, Salem, at whose home Mr. Downing passed away. Mr. Downing was a cousin of W.H. Downing, present county judge. The funeral services will be held at the Webb funeral parlors Wednesday at 1:30 o’clock p.m. with the Salem Elks Lodge in charge. Interment will be made in the Mt. Hope Cemetery."
