OBITUARY: Ellen Lucy Dederick of 621 Eureka Ave. died Monday at Silver Gardens Care Home. She was 92.
She was born Ellen Barnes December 20, 1892, in Hill Lake, Minn. In a June 17, 1915, ceremony held in Pine City, Minn., she married Frank Dederick. The couple moved to Washington, then in 1944 to Silverton. He preceded her in death in 1981.
Mrs. Dederick worked as a reporter at The Silverton Appeal for more than 30 years under three publishers, Mahlon Hoblitt, Ralph Rose, and Joe Davis. She wrote mostly news of the rural areas around Silverton. She retired just four months short of her 85th birthday. During World War II she worked in the Bremerton, Wash., shipyards.
As an active participant in community projects, she was a member of the Business and Professional Women, Silverton Writing Club, Waldo Hills Grange, Waldo Hills Community Club and the Willard Women’s Club. She served as an officer in each of them. Her service to others didn’t cease when she moved to Silver Gardens Care Home. She was elected chairman of the Resident Council and was voted Resident of the Month by her peers.
Survivors include her daughter, Frances Howard of Renton, Wash.; sons Charles Dederick of Forks, Wash., and Frank Dederick of Silverton; sisters Polly Walker and Russell Monette, both of Seattle, Wash.; brothers Robert Barnes of Gresham and Mike Barnes of San Jose, Calif.; eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Unger Chapel.
