OBITUARY:
Henry Condit, Pioneer Passes
Stayton – Henry B. Condit, 92, a Marion county pioneer, died at his home in Newport Wednesday, October 4, after a long illness, which confined him to his bed in recent years.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 8, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Weddle Funeral home in Stayton. Rev. Chester B. Gates of Portland will officiate and burial will be in the Condit cemetery near Pleasant Grove Presbyterian church near Aumsville.
Mr. Condit was born on his father’s donation land claim, May 21, 1858, in a log cabin before there was any floor. This same farm is now owned by Howard Gilbert and a small part of it, by the Pleasant Grove church of which Mr. Condit was a member. The structure is said to be the oldest still in use.
For more than 70 years he was identified with the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges. Members of the Stayton Odd Fellow lodge presented him with his 70 year jewel May 12, making up a delegation to Newport to make the presentation.
Mr. Condit was married to Mary Ella Wells in Oregon City, September 18, 1880. The couple quietly celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in the autumn a few months before Mrs. Condit died in May 1946.
Surviving are his five children: Addie Caspell and Ossie Grant, Newport; Carrie L. Hammer, Aumsville route; Everett Condit, Tillamook; and Ross R. Condit, Portland; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was a brother of the late A. O. Condit, for many years a prominent attorney at Salem.
The Odd Fellows will be in charge of the funeral.
